Let me give you some back ground. My wife and I just turned 60 and
we/ve done ballroom dancing and lessons for the last year
and a half. We have always enjoyed watching people dance the shag at
the beach and decided to find an instructor here in
the mountains of western North Carolina. The local college offered a
6 week class every monday for 2 hours. There were 6 couples
in the class and the other 5 spent the bulk of their time learning
the beat. (my wife and I luckily had learned to stay on beat with
the ballroom) The instructors worked with each couple
individually..once we learned one step we moved on. I also purchase
a DVD from two other instructors. What I really saw different and
liked was that you really emphasized the male leads.
Also I liked that you had the couple do the steps and said that was
good but it can be made smoother by.....
I think that is so important because as a beginner I want to first
learn how to do it but then after knowing the steps I want to refine
how it looks. I have been teaching a tai chi class at our local club
for the last 10 years and really marvel at peoples body
awareness. I have the luxury of having a mirrored room to use and
sometime that doesn/t even help. People think the look one
way and they might be doing something totally different with their
posture/balance/ etc I think a DVD starting
with the basic step and emphasizing the body position-weight shifts
etc would be very informative...even to the point of showing
the step and having music to demonstrate the strong beat and how to
start with the 5-6 count...I know with the VHS tape you
were trying to have something for all dance levels. Hopefully with
two DVD/s you can have one for someone that is just starting
and then a more advanced one. I personally would like to see some
variations on the side pass...and some male solo steps.
Again I really like the way you used positive reinforcement to do the
corrections. I/am sure the DVD/s will be wonderful.
Maybe we will bump into each other on Edisto or at a SOS function.

Dear Ellen,
A big note of thanks to you....................You
are an amazing dancer/teacher and it was such a pleasure to not only
dance with you but also given the opportunity to attend another one
of your outstanding workshop's. Your teaching of a combination along
with your patience to everyone attending was very re-assuring that
if we only applied a little bit of technique and personal style,we
could all be as good as we allow ourselves to be.
I also wanted to say from our heart's "THANKS" for giving my partner
and I some added pointer's on technique ( Footwork in the basic &
Hand to Hand connection). We both love to work with technique when
learning something new and we both are very grateful for all your help.
From our heart's in Friendship...............
